Mindz is a person-centered and entertaining investigation into the human brain. It is THE STEM incursion for schools from K-12 and THE go-to experience for those in Sydney.
The concept was founded in 2015 by Phil Dye, a teacher and past educator in the School of Medical Sciences at UNSW. He was part of a team pioneering electroencephalograph (EEG) use for students and a previous winner of the Golden Target award for community scientific communication.
Phil realized that while the public were becoming increasingly interested in the brain, plain-English information was hard to find. As a past educator in Australian schools, he also realized that teachers were never taught about the brain and the newest research on learning. For teachers, most Professional Development is about compliance, government initiatives and assessment. His 2020 Teacher’s Professional Development course entitled ‘Understanding the Learning Brain’ and is now accredited by both the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) and the Teachers’ Quality Institute (TQI). It gets rave reviews.
For public audiences, the ‘Journey Inside Your Brain’ 2-hour experience was launched in 2018. It is now listed with AirBnB as a specialist experience and is one of the top 10 experiences for visitors to Sydney. The experience is also available through the Mindz Brainplay website.
Between 2017 – 2020, Mindz was operated in Western Australia by Ben Currell. While not delivering experiences, Ben took the Mindz message to thousands of teachers and students. The WA branch closed in March 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19.
There have been many individuals and groups wanting to run a Mindz operation in other states. However, Mindz Brainplay is not like a Wendy’s Ice Cream franchise or a business anyone can run. Phil is very picky as to who runs the business. At present, NSW remains the flagship state for brain education.
